In this short video, a man and a woman are portrayed at a train station, waiting for their train to arrive. While they wait, they converse with each other and have a few drinks. During their conversation, there were several clues that I noticed with nonverbal and verbal communication. Each of them communicated very differently, but neither of them were very effective in the ways that they communicated or approached topics. I will break up the story into shorter sections so that it will be easier to fully analyze all of the elements of their conversation. In the very beginning of the story, the man walks away from the train tracks, leaving the woman standing there with an upset expression on her face. This was the first nonverbal communication element that I noticed, and it helped me to picture what the story was going to be about. She looked like she was upset and had something on her mind, she portrays this idea until she sits down in the bar with the man and they begin conversing. While they talk back and forth inside the bar, he appears to be avoiding a topic, by reading the newspaper, while she appears to be eager to discuss what’s on her mind. Goal competence is “the ability to set goals, anticipate probable consequences, and choose effective lines of action. I feel as though the woman had some goal competency, because you could tell that she wanted to talk about something, and she also mentioned that she would do anything to make the man happy. She talks about how they have not been happy, and she wants that to change, and she is willing to do what it take. To me, that is a goal.
