Never Let Me Go is an interesting novel, because while it is science fiction, it doesn’t put much emphasis on the scientific advancements and instead focuses on identity and relationships. This allows the book to be interesting even to people who have no interest in science fiction, and it is a fresh take on dystopian societies. Never Let Me Go is an excellent example of this; while it is a dystopian novel, it has unique characteristics that set it apart from most recently written dystopias. This is important, as I am currently riding the wave created by E.L. James, but I don’t want the novel I am working on to sound like every other erotica novel out there. Frequently used conventions in erotica include: a hot alpha male with a take-charge attitude, a damsel in distress, and the basic plot-line of romance with the inclusion of spicy scenes. These set conventions can serve as a guide for my writing, but will not fully control it – there is a lot of wiggle room as far as the events of the story. Like Atwood and …, I will follow some conventions of the genre without being redundant. I will adopt the style used by these authors to transition from past to present. For me, this will be used to give more insight into my characters’ personalities. Like suggested in some of the readings for this course, when implementing dialogue, it will be purposeful, and I will use limited dialogue tags to avoid interrupting the reading process.
