In all our lives, we look for things to motivate us to achieve the things we have decided to try and achieve. We may feel motivated to graduate from college because no one in our family ever did. We may want to become a high-level athlete because we are inspired by our favorite athletes. Other examples of this include wanting to get a high paying job because we grew up in poverty and doing well in school so we can escape living in a bad neighborhood as well as coming back to that neighborhood when we are successful to show the children that it can be done and motivate them to achieve similar goals. Those are just a few of many examples of ways people find motivation in their lives. The strong the motivation the harder we will work to achieve our goals, so it’s important to find something or someone that motivates you to be your best. For Bobby Quine in the short story “Burning Chrome” by William Gibson, he finds his motivation in women. …show more content…
Bobby uses her as a symbol and motivation to achieve a big job, while Jack truly cares about Rikki and looks out for her. Psychologically although we don’t get much detail about the life experiences of Jack and Bobby, we can infer that something big happened to one of them to get them to treat women so differently. The clearest example of this is when Jack says about Bobby “It was time for him to make his bundle and get out; so Rikki got set up higher and farther away than any of the others ever had, even though and I felt like screaming it at him, she was right there, alive, totally real, human, hungry, resilient, bored, beautiful, excited, all the things she was “(1011). This shows that Jack sees Rikki for who she is while Bobby just sees her as a symbol to get his hacking game back on track. That overall is the clear difference between how Jack and Bobby treat women and especially Rikki in this
