I too am struggling with at least half of Lamott’s writing/advice. She is often overly dramatic, saying things like “Jealousy is one of the occupational hazards of being a writer[,]” (p. 124 Jealousy) it makes me uncomfortable. Yes, people feel jealous. No, I do not need advice about how to deal with it. More than that, I do not want to read eight pages describing her jealousy.
I do not mind reading this like a self-help book. I happen to enjoy self-help books. However, it seems like in a few of her chapters, she is trying to be both a self-help book and a writing book, while succeeding at neither. Actually, that is too harsh; I am sure there are many readers who gain insights from the chapters I dislike. It is simply that I have read
