I chose to analyze “A Subtlety”. “ A Subtlety” is a striking huge sculpture. It uses all organic shapes to make the body. Although the sculpture is all white I believe it is because of the light or lack thereof in the sugar factory. This brings a strong contrast from the dark surroundings in the factory so that the sculpture will be the main focus. This sculpture contains a lot of mass. The body is bulky and takes up most of the space in between. The history of mammy stems from the minstrel shows where mamy was a black nursemaid or nanny in charge of white children. She was typically overweight and very dark. The actor that portrayed her would put on blackface a dress and makes themselves look bigger. In “A Subtlety” mammy is naked and white. The way she was sculpted was like that of a sphinx. Who were praised and looked up to. The sphinx was built by the people in order to praise them. This may be the intention of Walker. For Black people to reclaim this not as anything embarrassing but as apart of our history. To expose the truth behind mammies both sides of the story. The mammies that was used to be made fun of by white people viewing minstrel shows. As well as the real mammies that evolved to be big mommas and took care of the community and watched over our
