Jacob’s wrestling match with the “man” is symbolic of a much larger theme and meaning throughout the story. The fact that Jacob fights well in the match, and seems to “draw” the man symbolizes that God respects him and that Jacob is very close to God. In the story, the “man” that Jacob fights is also revealed to have many forms. This is because Jacob asks the man for a blessing and the “man” changes his name, which is something that only the LORD can do. Furthermore, earlier in Genesis God mentions the change in Jacob’s name, proving that it is He or an angel that actually fights Jacob.
