“Jack, sometimes you don’t have to mean to hurt someone to hurt someone.” This is what Jack’s babysitter told him when he first saw August as a child. In the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio, Jack Will is a sort of sidekick to the main character August Pullman. Jack is a kind child who tries to help August through his first ever year of school at Beecher Prep Middle School. Jack becomes one of August’s only two friends, someone who protects him from the bullies of the school especially when a war breaks out between them and the most popular kid at school. Although Jack did sit by August in class, he did not sit with him during lunch. In fact, he went to the opposite side of the cafeteria in order to avoid him. Another time he tried to seem cooler was when he was talking to the richer kids in his class. One of the kids said he abandoned his old sled by a tree and some “hobo” took it because it was not there when he returned. Jack did not tell them that he was the one who found the junky old sled and fixed it up, even though he was proud of the final product. Jack did not tell them this in order to avoid being outcasted for having less money and being teased for taking one kid’s “garbage”. The biggest event that showed Jack was a bit of a conformist was when he was caught talking behind August’s back. While Jack was talking to Julian Albans, the most popular kid at school and meanest, he said awful things about August in order to seem like he did not like hanging out with him, like it was against his will. Jack said that if he looked like August he would kill himself. When asked why he hung out with him so much Jack responded, “Tushman asked me to hang out with him at the beginning of the year, and he must have told all the teachers to put us next to each other in all our classes, or something... Jack was ethical. When Jack was first asked to show August around the school he declined the offer. It was not until he learned of another young boy who agreed to help August. This boy was Julian. Jack knew how much of a bully Julian was so he decided that he would agree to help August in order to protect him from Julian and all the other kids at school. Jack sat next to August on the first day of school because he saw he was sitting alone and others would refuse to get near him. When Jack was caught bad mouthing August by him and August started ignoring him, he wanted to know what he did wrong and wanted to make it right. When he found out August overheard him badmouthing him to Julian, he literally felt sick. He was horrified, not only for saying all those things, but because he deeply hurt August. Jack never wanted to hurt August’s feelings and he apologized in order to made things right between. After he apologized and they became friends again, he decided to be friends with him even if it meant he was unpopular and hated by most of their class because August was a good friend and he really liked him. They were tormented by Julian and his friends over the course of several months yet he stayed loyal to August because he no longer cared about popularity, he now knew that popularity held no value. The only valuable thing was true
