In the article ‘Smarter Than You Think,’ by Clive Thompson, the author explains the comparison of the human mind vs machine intelligence. He talks about the speed of these machines in a game of chess and the millions of calculations it can make in just seconds. Compared with humans, these machines outmatch ourselves in everything expect in one way. Thompson explains even though machines are better they have trouble with “intelligence amplification,” but when paired together the possibilities are endless. Later in the article he dives into the factors of the internet, digital devices, social media, and more. Til about the 1990’s the technology caught up to the potential where it was advances enough to challenge the human mind, aka IBM’s Watson. This machine could beat human challengers and become superior compared to most people. However, when teamed together the possibilities increased on how humans could use this technology to make breakthroughs in many didn’t field. With the advent of computers and eventually the internet the way we talk to each other has changed. Anyone in the world can login to their computers and go on web sites such as Facebook, Twitter, ect. People can talk to each other instantly with no delay and spread their thoughts, ideas, and more to one another. Thompson uses the example of the Arab Spring as a way social media spread a common idea to people in multiple countries. He explained how on a civic level, social media helps “dispel traditional political problems”. Even in recent months we see the power of social media and its power to convey a person’s message. Look at President Trump’s twitter account, he used his account multiply times a day to spread his messages and idea’s during his campaign and presidency. Seen as a political outsider he used social media effectively and gained people behind his idea’s. Thompson uses a personal story to convey the idea of spreading an idea and other people giving an opinion on a matter. “I blogged admiringly about the Spanish chess playing machine from 1915, and within minutes commenters offered smart critiques”.
