An Analysis Of Brother Ali's Song 'Own Light'

Improved Essays
My eighth grade year has been a time that many things I have learned in the past have came together, and concepts have started to make sense. There have also been hard parts of my eight grade year. The song “Own Light” by Brother Ali describes all of these things. The song has several lines that can support the claims I have made.
The first line in the chorus, “They've been trying to shut us down our whole life”. This relates to me because there are hardships in life, and people have also tried to shut us down. The line does a very good job of saying there are are hard things that happen and there are also good things, leading into the next line.
The second line is also from the chorus. It is “You've been trying to build me up my whole life”.

The band The Maine, formed in 2007 in Arizona, uses contrasting themes of happiness and sadness throughout their album American Candy, from which the song “(Un)Lost” comes. “(Un)Lost” is a song about finding oneself and recognizing the potential in themselves. From the title alone, it can be inferred that the song will discuss themes of being found and becoming lost, and in the context of the song this translates to finding oneself. The parenthesis around the ‘un’ part of the title signifies the simplicity of becoming lost. It is so easy to lose oneself in the modern world, and while recognizing this, the songwriter hints to the meaning of the song.…

Many of the lyrics refer to the loss of trust in modern America. We had been hit hard by the recession at the time and she describes a man in America who wanted a lot from life. He believes that he can make it in America and says that everyone will know his name. He describes getting everything he wanted, however when he sees how it is impossible he decides to give up his dream and wish he was born again. This entire song just describes the loss of hope in the American Dream.…

It is definitely important to remember Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ histories because it helps us understand the hardships they faced as a culture and it can further help us recognise how we can close the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people share four main world views; culture, land, place and country and relationships. The world view, relationships, is conveyed many times in each of the literary texts by relating back to certain events that Aboriginal elders faced. Three texts that clearly represent the world view relationships are,; Change the Game, by the Colli Crew; Treaty, by Yothu Yindi and Took the Children Away, by Archie Roach. The Colli Crew’s song, Change the Game, is about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people- mostly describing the people of the past; in the text, it states that they are singing from north Queensland near the border.…

This song touches me personally right down to the core when I am in a bad mood it gets me up and motives me to do my best. Katy Perry’s “Firework” song is an empowering thing, full of real people discovering their inner beauty and stepping out loudly and proudly, no matter what their detractors may say. “I think that’s why I wrote it, is because I really believe in people and I believe that people have a spark to be a firework,” Katy Perry told MTV News at Sunday night’s MTV Europe Music Awards in Madrid. “It’s just up to them, and a lot of times it’s only us that’s standing in the way of reaching our goals, fulfilling our destinies, being the best version of who…

Control The song that I am going to analyze is “Control” by Halsey. The song is titled control because, the singer mentioned that she has bipolar disorder, and she feels the constant confusion and frustration of who is actually controlling her state of mind. In the song many things symbolize her state of mind, and how she sees it, which would be like a “deadly disease”. The important symbol that is used in this song is “I’m bigger than my body, I’m colder than this home”, meaning that she see’s herself as something that is much better than what her body represents or shows, while the other part symbolizes how her other persona can be mean or cold to people.…

When I was just a toddler, I would try to climb in the dishwasher and take everything out while mom was trying to do the dishes. In order to keep me from doing that, dad needed to play video games as long as they entranced me. One of the games he played was The Legend of Zelda. Growing up with this game and spending time with my dad while he played it fueled the love I developed for this game and it’s music. The first four songs on the soundtrack of my life, composed by Koji Kondo, are songs from that video game.…
