Defiance The art of magazine advertising is vital to the success of many companies. Although the strategy varies between magazines, ads, and companies advertising, many of the same central ideas are incorporated in every magazine ad. Most importantly, the ad must be appealing to the eye. The right target audience should be taken in to consideration in order to draw in the target demographic. Health and beauty advertisements focus on being visually appealing to help draw in people looking to become more attractive, themselves. In the December 2014 issue of Glamour magazine, Juvederm applied this advertisement strategy in hopes of attracting more customers. Many details of the ad heavily reflect the story of Adam and Eve. The first main indicator is the use of the apple within the ad. In the Bible, God creates Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. They are told that they must not eat the fruit from the tree of knowledge and wisdom. By eating the fruit from the tree, Adam and Eve are defying god. The woman in the picture, clearly chosen because of her younger looks, but still from the correct age range. The camera angle shown in the picture stresses the seductive nature of the ad because it is up close and from the side. In the story of Adam and Eve, Eve seduces Adam into eating the fruit. The ad, showing a seductive nature, is doing the same thing, tricking the reader into buying the product. Directly in the ad it reads, “Defy Gravity.” By deliberately using the word, “defy” the ad is alluding to the Bible. Also, the simple clothes the woman is wearing could be related to how Adam and Eve did not have clothes until they ate the fruit from the tree and began to feel ashamed then wore clothes made from what was found in the garden. The ring on the woman’s left hand is showing that she is married, just like Adam and Eve. The story of Adam and Eve describes the product because by using Juvederm, the user is “defying” what your skin should be doing which is appealing to many people, similar to what is written about
