In "A Good Man Down" Lee Jenkins uses numerous writing elements in his article, including word choice and pathos. Many people may ask how communities of such small towns can begin to think of ways to overcome such large tragedies, in this case a devastating tornado, and a school shooting, in which a prominent member of the community was killed, in a small town called Parkersburg?
Jenkin begins the article describing the upkeep of the "sacred acre" football field by Thomas, a 58-year-old head coach, of the football team. A way Jenkins introduced word choice as one of his elements was the vivid representation of the upkeep of a beloved high school football field in the heart of Parkersburg. The devastating tornado that took out over half of the town of Parkersburg only begins to bring out the emotional part of the writing he is trying to convey. Jenkins knows his readers, he tries to connect with them in his writings about the effect the tornado had on Thomas, the main character. Thomas did what he could to help the community after the tornado by being the leader. walking through the destruction, neighbors following close behind him until he got to the edge of the football field, staring at the mangled bleachers along with the "Sacred Acre" that was punctured by wood and glass. While standing next to Principal Meyer the next morning, Thomas pledged to rebuild the field in time for the 2008 season opener.
