Being as quiet as possible we crawled back. I was nervous, if we went into a wrong spot they might notice use so we make sure not to move fast. I also didn't want to creep up on a landmine. We had to carry him through bushes and through barbed wire. This led to us being scratched which started to bleed. t felt as if my arms were going to come off. Sometimes I would come eye to eye with a dead solider and it was frightening. After awhile we realized the men that fired at us were far behind us so we stopped to check on the injured man. His body was limp and as cold as ice. "He's gone," I say in remorseful

While Doc Leal was wounded, he tended to his own injuries and others around him until he was shot a second time and couldn’t move. The doc wasn’t just worrying about himself, but also the members around him that he was “trying to get them to protected cover.” (Lehrack, 10,000 Pains, 189.) We had played a key role in keeping the enemy at bay when our numbers were falling short. We never took credit for what happened that day, but at the end of it, we all sat around and talked about how we just went through some crazy stuff together. It may seem odd but it was fun. It is what we train day and night to do… to be able to be experts in our weapon systems and to engage and close with the enemy. It was cold and ordinary evening on March 5, 1770, when I was walking down King street with my friend Henry. As were walking past the Custom House a young wig maker's apprentice walked up to a British soldier and insulted him because he had not payed for a wig. Another British soldier had walked out and scolded the young boy for disrespecting a British soldier. The boy exchanged insults with the soldier so he pulled out his musket and struck the boy on the side of the head. A stream of chills rushed through my body when I witnessed that.…

D-Day +1; some say we’re over the hump, but I know the trials and tribulations of this Battle have only just begun. Activity throughout the night inhibited rest for myself and my fellow men, and the cocktail of misery from yesterday leaves a bad taste in our mouths. I, by the grace of God, managed to get two hours of sleep, but was jolted awake with the weight of today’s duties; to capture the ominous Suribachi (1). Capture it and we win, fail and we die. The responsibility of this crushed down on my heart like an elephant slowly cracking my ribs.…
