All Americans have access to free education from when they are five years old, until they are 18 years old. Also, as an American you get to enjoy Sunday football, concerts, and 24/7 television. This is all possible because of the the Americans that fight to protect our country for our safety. In John McCain III’s essay, “Veterans Day: Never Forget Their Duty”, John McCain and other Americans spend time as prisoners of war, yet they still find a way to honor America and sing the Pledge of Allegiance every day. They did this so all of the American kids back home could go to school everyday, earn an education, and so the American people can have constant entertainment with no worries. These Americans may be discriminated against due to their skin color, This is seen in Normal Rockwell’s painting, “The Problem We All Live With”, where a young black girl, Ruby Bridges, is walking into school with four U.S. marshals. On the wall behind her there are the words “nigger” and “KKK” written. Ruby was the first black child to attend the William Frantz Elementary School in 1960. This shows that some “Americans” had a hard time accepting the fact that she was attending this school and were racist towards her. But, other real Americans knew that Ruby deserved the same rights as the white children. This is relevant because today we still have people in America who discriminate against black people. This is seen in the recent shootings of innocent black people in America, and in the racial slurs that are still used against these people. Langston Hughes realizes this in his poem, “I, Too, Sing America”, he is a black American man who is upset with America. He writes, “I am the the darker brother. They send me to eat in the kitchen.” In those lines he is showing how he is discriminated against, and then later in the poem he writes, “They’ll see how beautfiul I am And be ashamed- I, too, am America.”.
