一、 內容大意Summary
Seventeen-year-old Colin Singleton, former child prodigy and anagram-lover, had dated nineteen girls named Katherine (all spelled in that matter) and had been dumped by all of them. Although he had an IQ of over 200, he had not yet become a genius, whom he aspired to be. He wanted to have a “eureka” moment and to matter. After recently graduating from high school and getting dumped by Katherine XIX, Colin longed to “fill the hole in his stomach”. Hassan Harbish, his Muslim friend, convinced Colin to go on a road trip

In the end, Hassan enrolled for two college classes (Colin had tried to convince him to do so throughout the book) and Colin was satisfied with “not mattering”. The trio set off on another road trip to an unknown destination.

二、 我的觀點和心得Feedback
Alain de Botton once stated, “One kind of good book should leave you asking: how did the author know that about me?” I believe that An Abundance of Katherines is a surprisingly realistic novel about the challenges a teenager might face with love. Although the topic of the story might be serious and solemn, the author combines it with humor to make a funny and entertaining yet educative novel. I believe that the novel is very unpredictable and that the author, John Green, uses many literary elements to make the novel interesting. Firstly, he puts a hook at the end of chapters to create suspense so readers would want to read on. However, the author did this at the end of the book and I felt frustrated because I didn’t know what would happen next after the second road trip. Secondly, he artistically and skillfully describes actions and uses dialogue to help us characterize and imagine the characters. Thirdly, he uses flashbacks at the end of chapters to help us understand the past and how it links with the present, but also breaks it up so we would gradually understand what is happening, and this creates suspense as well. Fourthly, he

The novel is well rounded, but only falls short due to the accidental mistakes made by the author. Nonetheless, the fact that the book is followed by several sequels ultimately provides the possibility that the author fixes the issues within the next installments. However, despite being a well rounded novel the book at times is dragged out with unnecessary additional words where the author attempts to further describe her point. The reader at times will have to re-read several passages to understand the repetitive word choice and will have to overcome the lack of suspense within the novel’s key…

We all have idols, people we look up to. For some, it may be a favorite player, a teacher, parents, or a character from a book. Someone I aspire to be like would be the character Alex from The Dead and The Gone, by Susan Pfeffer. In The Dead and The Gone, the world is thrown into chaos when the Moon moves closer to earth, bringing apocalyptic consequences like volcanoes, earthquakes, and global catastrophe. Alex, who lives in New York City, is told to watch over his sisters, Bri and Julie until his parents return home, which they never do.…

John Green's An Abundance of Katherines depicts a tale of a child prodigy, who throughout his entire life, has only dated females with the name Katherine. The story begins as the main character, Colin, is dumped for the 19th time, by a Katherine. Colin took this break up severely and in order to get his mind off of the breakup, his best friend Hassan decided that they should leave to go on a road trip. Symbols of love, relationships, and individuality are found widespread throughout their trip, and these symbols help convey to the reader the themes and messages that Green is trying to communicate in his story. The symbols we see Green using are, the Katherines Colin has dated, and a mathematic theory Colin created called the Theory of Underlying…

Violence is not beautiful or wonderful. It is vile and horrible. It is feared for its destruction and brutality, but sometimes, it is only necessary. This mentality doesn’t quite apply to life, but more so to great literature, in which violent scenes do not exist for their own sake. Khaled Hosseini’s…

The two stories “A&P” by John Updike, and “Araby” by James Joyce both focus on character personalities. Sammy from “A&P” and the young narrator from “Araby” both go through a transition from childhood to adulthood, something that everybody experiences growing up. Both stories are often compared and seen as a similarity, young characters that take an interest in women, and not being able to tolerate the rejection they receive. Both men fail their missions when Sammy defends the honor of the young women in relation to their bathing suit attire, and in “Araby” a present is promised but not delivered.…

Having never taken the DISC assessment before, I was unsure about what to expect. I thought it was fairly accurate in many ways, but I felt that it very much tapped into what I consider my “work” self and did not cover much of who I am outside of that. I scored a high average score on the D spectrum. This seemed accurate, as I am relatively competitive overall, I like looking at the big-picture, I don’t mind taking risks, I can be critical of those that don’t measure up to my standards and I am very interested in new and innovative things.…
