Amy X Neuburg: A Musical Genius

Improved Essays
Let me start off by saying that Amy X Neuburg is a creative musical genius and there is really no other way to word it; she is truly an avant-garde musician. She embraces an approach that mixes modern technology to complement her vocal. She takes pride in the creative techniques she employs and does not seem to mind that her music does not conform to contemporary mainstream pop music. I admire that she does not allow herself to be restrained by popular music approaches and that she freely experiments with whatever comes to mind and develops her own distinct patterns and techniques. Furthermore, I think that there is a catchy tune to her songs and interesting lyrics that sometimes may seem a little random. Although her instruments are few, she

After standing in the middle of her living room, playing Vivaldi’s Four Seasons for an hour, I leave her apartment and put on Isaac Stern’s recording of these concertos. As I enter the 81st Street subway station, Stern is emulating the summer sounds of the cuckoo's voice and sweet songs of the turtledove and finch but somehow I still overhear a female cover of Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud.” I usually ignore subway musicians but this was one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite artists and this girl sounded really good…

The dialect she uses, as well as her ways of pronouncing most of her words, fits the mold which most people unconsciously hold for 'African American Woman'. A discussion of this auditory style dominates nearly all discussion of her work, causing the vast majority of commentators on music to conclude that she is lacking in authenticity, and therefore undeserving of serious consideration, not by virtue of her genre or the content of her songs, but because she sounds like a different race than what she was born. This is in spite of the fact that she has been living in the exact region from which this accent predominantly hails for the majority of her life, and by all indications developed as a part of the culture for whom this accent is common.…

For all the bubblegum pop territory he’s covered, SOPHIE hasn’t made a song this candid yet. “BIPP” and “ELLE” were strange, lurking introductions; “LEMONADE” and “HARD” were no-holds-barred masterpieces of experimental pop. The reclusive British producer’s most recent two singles have been a little more traditional - “MSMSMSM” was a one-dimensional yet enjoyable trap song, and this track is a straight-up pop ballad. However, it’s still got that SOPHIE touch, and it’s lighter than ever. “JUST LIKE WE NEVER SAID GOODBYE” is a lesson in minimalism; this song evokes so many feelings with so little, both lyrically and instrumentally.…

Joe Smith’s cornet accompaniment relates to Fletcher Henderson’s piano accompaniment by that they both focus on supporting Bessie Smith rather than over powering her voice. This is because blues is more of vocal genre, in the song I noticed that what was being sung and the lyrics was what was dominantly heard. For me, I tended to concentrate on what melody on the song and tone of her voice rather than the instruments playing. Both the cornet and piano accompaniment exemplified the practice of call and response which is a popular thing during the Urban Jazz era. Throughout the song I noticed that both instruments tended to change melodies and become more heard after a lyric was sung.…

I know that I have stated this in almost every reading response I have written, but I heavily dislike the fact the author insist on using a storytelling method to talk about his subjects, including unrelated anecdotal information. I can appreciate Rob Schreiber’s intense love for music, because me too, and I think it is great he started Pitchfork out of his basement, just doing what he loves. I can relate to Schreiber because I too am in love with music but also have to work a bunch of mundane jobs to get through school. I enjoy that it is a standard rags-to-riches story. In my experience, I think I would enjoy pursuing something like that: just trying to work in what I love, even if it takes a while.…

Marie-Juliette Olga Boulanger, better known as Lili Boulanger, was sister to Nadia Boulanger who is regard as one of the most influential pedagogues of the 20th century. Though Lili Boulanger's impact on the musical world maybe not have been as numerous as her sister's, it was not due to lack of talent but time: most of her life she lived with poor health and died at the age of 25 in 1918. In the short time she was alive, she became the first woman to receive the coveted Prix de Rome in 1913 for her cantata Faust et Hélène (1913). She also wrote many others works including, Les sirènes (1911) for choir, D'un matin de printemps (1917-18) for orchestra, and Pie Jesu (1918) for soprano, string quartet, harp, and organ, which she lovingly dedicated…

When I signed up to take music appreciation, I knew it would be the perfect class for me. I myself take up being a musician as a hobby, I’ve played the guitar for years and have a basic understanding of music in the world. I knew that music had deep history within its roots, but I always had a curiosity to learn a slice of that history which is exactly what this class did. Besides playing an instrument and make music, I also became very fond of listening to music as a hobby. I began to have a love for music itself and take the time to listen to complete album over and over again to reveal their underlying themes like a poem.…
