For example, I work at a hotel and diner, the hotel registration is located in the diner. When I am communicating with a guest it is dramatically different than if I were to carry on a conservation with one of the servers whose age ranges from late teens or early twenties. For instance, a person is more likely to converse in a professional mode when attending a job interview than if they were in the presence of close friends or family. Furthermore, one would talk with a child in a different manner than they would their lawyer. It is all dependent upon the situation in addition to the individual. Tan used the same varying forms of communication contingent upon her audience. She had a formal side that dealt with stockbrokers and gave speeches in support of her career, while returning to a more relaxed form of communication with her own mother. Tan’s mother probably used this same method when speaking in her native language. Although she became hindered by the new language she knew exactly what she wanted to conveyed to other people.
With regards to the stockbroker, Tan’s mother wanted a professional tone because she felt the stockbroker would respond in a positive fashion to her daughters professional mannerisms versus the language she had been capable of exerting. It would be akin to the fact that if I lived in a foreign country my ability to speak fluently with the native people would be severely lacking and I would also need an individual to interpret what I meant in order for clear communication to take
