Amy Tan Fish Cheeks

I drew a picture for the text “Fish Cheeks” by Amy Tan. In my drawing, I included many details to recall the story. The drawing is divided into two parts, one is people sitting down around the table which takes the most of the drawing space, and the other is at the upper-right corner of a Christmas tree and a calendar. First, the Tan’s relatives are sitting on the right side of the table while the minister’s family is sitting on the left side. I concentrated my drawing on the right side with facial expression on each of the character. There are people talking loudly, showing no respect to the guests. Next to them are also Tan’s relatives, who “licked the ends of their chopsticks and reached across the table” (Tan). I also drew most of the dishes on the right side to show again how her relatives are being disrespectful. This contribute to the thought of how Tan “wanted to disappear” (Tan). Moving to the center of the table, the father is poking his chopsticks “just below the fish eye and plucked out the soft meat” (Tan). This made Tan feeling embarrassed and she is the only one on her family whom I didn’t drew a smiley face on it. On the calendar, there is number 24 on it, which tell it is the Christmas’ Eve day. Under the Christmas tree, there is only one present, which is from her mother. Chinese family does not celebrate Christmas as important as it is to family that does. Thus, the whole drawing delivers the message of culture
