There are many people who can’t speak proper English, maybe because English wasn’t their first language. Or simply because they didn’t grow up around it. In the passage Mother-Tongue by Amy Tan, Amy wants to let the audience know about another language. This is another language that she speaks people refer it to as “broken” english. In her passage she uses some rhetorical strategies such as pathos, logos, and ethos. Amy Tan only speaks from personal experience. Her mother is a Chinese, Native. In the passage she gives examples about how she feels when people call her mothers English “broken” and examples of how “broken” english has given her struggles in school and how she conquered. She also shows us her love she has for “broken” English. She shows us, the audience another perspective of language and is trying to get a point across. Her mother feels as if she’s limited to what she can say because people might not comprehend her English. Amy Tan used rhetorical strategies such as pathos, logos, and ethos to write a passage from her own personal experiences. She talked about how people called her mother’s English “broken” and just how much that bothered her to hear that word. As well as “limited english”. Amy spoke “proper” english because of the English they taught her in school. Tan shows us she is wise she became an English major her first year of college despite the fact that she also grew up speaking “broken” english. Tan never stopped talking “broken” english with her mother. Once she became a writer, she wrote a story in her “broken” language that she grew up so that her mother would read it without any struggles. The outcome was happiness, and Amy was very proud because she had succeeded where she wanted
