When you were young did your parents ever make you participate in something you did not enjoy? This is how Jing-mei felt in the story “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan. In the beginning of this story the main character states, “After seeing, once again, my mother’s disappointed face, something inside me began to die (Tan 19)” She did not enjoy disappointing her mother but an experience like this can pull a child two different directions. This piece of art really shows how she takes her culture with her everywhere she goes. Kahlo painted this self-portrait after an abrupt move to the United States for her husband’s art career. On one side of the painting you can see the beautiful colors and detail that went into the recreation of her heritage. On the other side of the painting it is dark, dreary, and very industrialized. There is a visible and emotional contrast that you can feel when looking at the painting. What she had experienced with her culture in Mexico caused her to view the United States in a negative way.
