In The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, A few separate stories about mothers and daughter are told. One of the pairs is Jing-Mei and her mom, Suyuan, whom had a complicated relationship. Jing-Mei and her mom often did not see eye to eye and that caused some conflict between them. Likewise, often my mom and me have our disagreements. Our quarrels are frequent and can last from minutes to weeks. Jing Mei and Suyuan are contracting to my mom and me due to the high expectations set by by the mothers, the differences in culture between the older women, and the sacrifices made by the two mothers.
Like Jing-Mei’s mom, my mom expects me to be a prodigy. In the chapter,”Two Kinds” Jing-Mei’s mom expects Jing-Mei to be prodigy and puts her through various tests and quizzes to see what she excelled in, but Jing-Mei failed all of them. Suyuan cleaned houses so that Jing-Mei could learn piano in “Two Kinds”. Another sacrifice she made was when in “Best Quality” she took the worst crab that was considered to be bad luck and gave Jing-Mei the other, better, crab, but Jing-Mei did not fully understand the significance of this action at the time. This was considered to be a huge sacrifice her mom was making. She also did not understand that it shows how deeply she cares for and loves Jing-Mei. She also worked for Jing-Mei to take piano lessons. She was willing to clean someone else's house so Jing-Mei could take piano lessons, which was another sacrifice. My mom works really hard for me to be able to attend Alverno. She sacrifices so much and dedicates so much time to my education. This is because loves me just like how Suyuan loved Jing-Mei. They both hoped that their daughters futures would be brighter than their own lives, and were willing to do whatever they can to help them get to a better
