Because we are with our families for longer periods of times than anyone else. It makes people grow closer as families when they all can understand each other without fear of being of judged. That affects someone out in the real world when comes to schools and tests. Tan feels this way because it has affected her schooling when she was younger.
Then when Tan was in school when she was younger she was pushed to towards science and math. While she was never doing poor english her teaches still pushed her towards those subjects.
