I really enjoyed Sandra Cisneros reading of her memoir, A House of My own. I enjoyed this performance for numerous reasons. Firstly, because it was a chapter that was very fresh and clear in my mind. Whilst watching Sandra read her written words out loud I felt as if I could see my own book in front of me and read the words along with her. Furthermore, in spite of the fact that I love writing and there are certain genres and authors that I can genuinely enjoy reading, I am a very poor reader.…
The first thing I noticed about this book was the amazing quality of writing. Right off the bat, I was hooked, drawn in by the fantastic storytelling of Ransom Riggs. In Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, Riggs creates a world all it's own by mixing humor, magic, and mystery flawlessly. The way in which he writes is beautiful: ". . . these weren't the kind of monsters that had tentacles and rotting skin a seven-year-old might be able to wrap his mind…

back to the days of the Confederacy. Our data, therefore, do not reveal a decline of regional identity per se, as much as a decline of identification with the Old South”() In other words, this old south relic is unable to sustain herself in the midst of a New south environment. In Everything That Rises Must Converge, by Flannery O’Conner, O’Conner similarly portrays the conflict that arises when with contrasting ideas try to co-exist. Although O’Conner’s short story mainly focuses on race relations between whites and African- Americans, the text presents the issue that one way of thinking has to give way to another.…
The article Taking My Parents to College brought back the memories of preparing for the next four years of my life. The author Jennine was talking about here first time attending college and how scary of an experience it as for her. Here In America we are itching to leave home and finally be on our own, and for her parents to stay for days after orientation isn't a norm in today society. Her parent weren't familiar with the customs that come with their child leaving the family, and here in america it seems parents have a minds set of i have one main job for the next 18 years and thats raise my kid till he/she is 18 and make sure you raise them right, whatever right maybe in their eyes. So for her to see other families leave and her’s stay already…
In The Glass Castle, Jeanette Walls talked about her struggles in life, and I would like to explain some of the things I have endured in my life. For approximately sixty years, the fight for civil rights had taken the United States by storm and still continues to do so today. There have been arguments by various historians that claim that the millennial generation is strikingly similar to the youth from the 1960s, in which rebellion against discrimination was rampant. As progressive ideas become popular amongst the youth, there will always be people who try to fit in by supporting the movements in theory, yet refuse to take physical action to help. In Flannery O’Connor’s story, “Everything That Rises Must Converge,” a young man named Julian is angry with his mother for her racist attitude towards African-Americans. Although It would appear that Julian means well by supporting the rights…

Laura Ingalls Wilder likes to read and write. Another thing she likes to do is make books. She was the one who made the book series The Little House on the Prairie. Predictability in Toni Morrison’s novels Critics have noted that characters in Nobel Laureate Toni Morrison’s novels are predictable with some type of southern connection that depicts African-American life at various time periods in history. Her novels often raise questions about race, gender, and address issues that are significant to contemporary readers. For millions of African Americans, the south was called home until the massive migration to the north. However, for many, including Morrison’s parents, the south held historical and cultural significance. During the 1950s, segregation still existed, but in the armed forces, some units were being integrated and leaning toward one unified military.…
“That’s the thing about pain, it demands to be felt”. Although these words are from the book Hazel Grace is obsessed with (almost like I am with this book)it is still pertinent. Those words slice through me like a knife and with those words I can use to not only explain The Fault in our Stars by John Green but also a lot of my experiences throughout the past four years of my life. It may sound cliche as does most everything that I say, but I believe that without the feelings of pain, sadness and even anger we wouldn’t be able to feel things like happiness, love and excitement. Even if we didn’t have such negative emotions how would we know if we were truly feeling these positive emotions and happy moments without no bad experience to compare to those feelings.…
Location The bad beginning story takes place in an unidentified place. The author Lemony Snicket never actually mentioned the name of the city. He mentioned several places they went to, but he didn’t mention the name of the city. Furthermore, he didn’t mention what year the story took place in.…
Denver is the youngest child of Sethe who has been marked by utter isolation, for example “She was being avoided by her classmates….that they made excuses and altered their pace not to talk with her. It was Nelson Lord who asked her the question about her mother that put chalk….she never went back” (102). The separation of Denver from the community hinders the formation of her self-identity. Accordingly, Denver becomes increasingly lonely and self-seeking, afraid of the outside world; she confines herself to her house and is unable to go out into the community. This loneliness causes Denver’s attraction to Beloved, the embodied spirit of Sethe’s “crawling already baby” returned to haunt the present.…
When a wedding comes around, it has become customary for the couple to provide a “Wedding Wish Box” at the ceremony. All the invited guests provide the newlywed couple with their best wishes and advice for their marriage. This ritual assumes that there is one perfect way to uphold your marriage, and believe me, everyone has something to say about which marriage is the “right” marriage. Fawn Weaver, writer of the Happy Wives Club, says that the secret to a happy marriage is actually not a secret at all. It is mutual respect that leads to trust and culminates into the daily choice to be happy together.…
