amorphous feeling that lies deep inside one’s soul. It lies in its slumber, waiting in the unheard for the flicker of piano keys, or the words of loved ones. Inspiration intently waits for a moment, a moment where everything seems to make sense, a moment where all unknowns can be connected at the precipice of knowledge. Inspiration can occur in anyone at any particular time and for me, it happened when I went to a nursing home for the first time and experienced the moment that made me want to help servicemen. In the twenty-first century we tend to distract ourselves with technology that keeps us from taking the time to genuinely think, or rather that is what twenty one pilots want you to see. “Car Radio,” written by Tyler Joseph of twenty one pilots, is based from a personal experience Joseph had where his car radio was stolen and the experiences that followed. It, and the associated music video, produce the argument that we need to spend more of our lives in silence rather than surrounded by sound. The rhetoric of twenty one pilot’s “Car Radio” is effective because of emotional appeals to ethos, logos, and pathos. Twenty one pilots establish their credibility by placing themselves in a place of power and control in their music video for “Car Radio.”…

Upon my arrival at Commonwealth Honors Academy a mere twelve days ago I was ignorant to the fact that I was going to learn so much in my time spent here, but now I look back and realize that I have gained so much knowledge and I have acquired more details to add to what I knew before arrival. Overall I have learned that most things in life require constant attention and effort to make them truly work and that anyone you come in contact with and create an influence with will then, in turn, make a larger circle of influence that can quickly become bigger than you can ever be. The universal themes that have had the largest impact on me are the themes of Happiness, Friendship, and Sovereignty of Education. It was Aristotle who defined happiness…

My first memory at North Carolina Governor’s School West is of crying next to my parents on a bench under a giant tree. It was move-in day for the five-and-a-half-week session, and I was already sure that they would be the worst weeks of my life. I was terrified; I knew no one except two students from my high school, who were rising juniors and to whom I had never spoken before. After that stressful first day, I fell asleep unsure of how I could make it on my own in a place filled with such talented, intelligent, and unfamiliar people. A week later, I knew that Governor’s School would be one of the most treasured experiences of my entire life.…

Scholarship, service, leadership, and character are the characteristics that lay the foundation for success and are the reason why I perform at such a high degree in everything that I do. Although I’ve always had high ambitions for myself, the scholarship aspect of the National Honor Society confirms the importance of education and also reaffirms that anything is possible and it made easier with academic achievement. However, any achievement, academic or not, is meaningless to me if I don’t give back one way or another to the people who made my success possible including teachers, school staff members, fellow classmates, parents, and friends. On top of this, I learned that the smallest of gestures can make a big difference in someone’s life…

WHY I WANT TO JOIN THE HONORS PROGRAM Alighting from a Boeing 747 jetliner on the JFK tarmac on Thursday evening, April 28, 2016, I walked into what could be called a new page in my life story—a new start. That was my first time on this side of the hemisphere. With little money, zero friends, one close relative and little to hold on to, I found myself leaning on only a thread of asset – my mind. My Catalyst Each individual in this world carries on a view of themselves, of others, of things, of beings that expand from one state of mind to another. Each event that has happened from birth to this day acts like a rhythmic catalyst carrying one piece of the story to the next. At certain times of our lives, that catalyst can become more than a regular “piece”, it becomes something that we often look back to as we grow up. It could range from first realizing that a plump man in a red velvet suit cannot possibly squeeze his body into a chimney, to standing in front of a crowd dressed in a white dress and veil to say “I do”. What has impacted me, were a few simple words that my uncle had said that had extraordinarily simplified my young and yet to be understood life.…
