The 1990s were arguably the best time for Romantic Comedies and also the birth era of the popular “chick-flick.” The ‘90s brought us directors like Gary Marshall and Nora Ephron whose feel good films left our hearts warm and stars like Julia Roberts with her clumsy relatability and Richard Grere with his suave demeanor. The ‘90s also brought Kathy Maio, feminist film critic. Maio’s 1991 book Popcorn and Sexual Politics is a collection of analysis of popular ‘90s films—especially Romantic Comedies. Popcorn and Sexual Politics aims to examine the role and portrayal of women on screen.…

Wisdom is a very precious thing. We almost always associated wisdom with older people and especially kings and leaders. In a story called “Popocatepetl and Ixtlaccihuatl” by: Juliet Piggott Wood , Two negative ways the Emperor's lack of wisdom brought about tragic results are first the bribe for Ixtlaccihuatl and the Emperor's belief in the Warriors. First it was unwise of the emperor to bribe soldiers for his daughter. On page 948 it states that “...he showed a selfishness and shortsightedness towards his daughter and his empire which many considered was not truly wise.”…

Bless Me, Ultima is a beautifully written novel that connects the audience to the characters and paints a wonderful picture, immersing readers into the story. This story is set in the desert plains town of Las Pasturas, New Mexico during the 1940s, around World War II. The main character, Antonio, lives with his mother, father, and two sisters, Deborah and Theresa, in a house in the llano, the open plain. When Antonio is almost seven years old, his mother and father send for the curandera, Ultima, to come and live with them, as she has helped their family throughout the years and they are obligated to give back to her in some way. The overall setting is rather homely, but still feels a bit lonely, as it is set in a desert.…

“Continuidad de Los Parques” features a skilful manipulation of a mere 543 words in order to insert a story within a story. In the first realm, (or story one) a man retreats to a novel he had begun reading a few days earlier and had to leave due to urgent business matters. This realm is initially portrayed as a description of reality. Sitting in his study in an armchair of green velvet, with his head resting comfortably against the back of the chair, he enjoys the presence of his cigarettes and the view of the park from his window. The protagonist likes the feeling of giving himself over to the story, and allows himself to be quickly and consciously drawn into the action of the novel.…

The best short story I have read is, “Mericans” by Sandra Cisneros. The story is about a little girl who is narrating where she is caught between the ‘old’ world and the ‘new’ world. I like the mixture of Spanish words in the story such as La Virgen de Guadalupe and la ofrenda because it gives a sense of a different culture. I also like the humorous use of the ‘awful grandmother’ because the reader can visualize a specific heritage and cultural behavior. I enjoy this short story, it reminds me of my Heritage because of how hispanic grandmas pray then give ofrendas at church and take their time while doing so.…

We all have dreams that are so close, but seem so far away. There may be something stopping us from reaching for these dreams such as, other people’s opinions, cultural traditions, or our own self-doubt. A controversy lies between what we wish to accomplish and what others think we need to accomplish. It all comes down to our personal responsibility and the opinions of others that keeps us from moving forward. It is simply reality.…

Pedro Almodovar’s twentieth feature film, Julieta, chronicles the title character’s life as she is forced to reflect upon her riddled past and confront the tragic circumstances that surround the disappearance of her daughter. Almodovar based Julieta off of a series of short stories written by Nobel Prize winning author Alice Munro, which follow three stages of a Canadian woman’s life who faces similar circumstances. At it’s conception, Julieta was intended to be Almodovar 's first English-language film; however Almodovar was not confident writing the script in English and settled on setting the film in Spain and making it in Spanish. The New York Film Festival was the film’s American debut and both leading actresses as well as Almodovar were present for the occasion. Julieta relates to the trends identified in global art cinema by displaying symbolic and ambiguous aesthetics, depending on festival circuits rather than studio distribution, and employing…

As I am writing this paper, I am transcended into memories of my childhood as I am climbing, for the second time already, the highest mountain of Albania; Mount Tomor. Now when I say climbing I mean mainly being in the back of a pick up truck with at least 5 other members of my family as we are covering us faces from the dirt of the unpaved roads. Why is an 8 year old going through all of this you may ask? This journey is part of a pilgrimage that occurs every year and it symbolizes the virtues of Bektashism. Maybe you have never heard of it before or maybe you indeed have, but Bektashism is the religion that I once belonged to when I was growing up in Tirana, Albania.…

The short story “Federigo's Falcon” by Giovanni Boccaccio and the poem “How Do I Love Thee” by Elizabeth Barrett Browning both develop the theme of love in their own ways. “Federigo's Falcon” develops the theme of love by telling the story of a man who gave up his most prized possessions twice for the woman he loves. “How Do I Love Thee” develops the theme of love by having the narrator detail how much they love their partner and by describing their unconditional love. Both pieces of writing develop the theme of love in different ways, but there are some similarities between the two. “Federigo’s Falcon” develops the theme of love by detailing the sacrifices Federigo made for the woman he loved, Monna Giovanna.…
