When Fortunato had referenced to the Masons, by doing a kind of secret handshake/dance move, Montresor revealed the trowel that he had in his cloak. He to Fortunato that he too was part of the Mason brotherhood. He said this to Fortunato to explain why he had the a trowel with him in his cloak. But, his plan with the Masonry trowel was a lot different than what that is intended for it. Montresor planned to lure Fortunato into the basement by telling him about a cask of Amontillado. Fortunato followed Montresor into the basement. When they reach the farthest end of the basement, Montresor tells Fortunato that the wine was in the closet-like small room at the end of the hall. Fortunato went in there and Montresor locked up Fortunato in chains around his wrists and ankles. After that, Montresor uncovered stones and , using the trowel, closed the small doorway into the room that Fortunato was locked up in. Minutes after Montresor finished closing the doorway, Fortunato screams stopped. Fortunato was dead.
