Amontillado Montresor Characteristics

Many people can recognize the name Edgar Allan Poe, one of America’s most influential writers. He was praised for his suspenseful moods and pessimistic energy incorporated in his literary works. Not only that, Poe was also recognized for his deranged characters that had dark auras surrounding them. It is believed that the reason behind his crestfallen style is due to Poe losing several loved ones throughout his life, including his wife and his mother. “The Cask of the Amontillado” is one of his most praised work of art. An example of this was when he was sealing Fortunato into the niche. Instead of feeling guilty and ashamed when he heard Fortunato's anguished shouts for help, Montresor was hardly affected by his suffering and instead mocked him. This act of cruelty enhances Montresor’s maliciousness and viciousness. Another demonstration of Montresor’s mercilessness was shown in the story when Fortunato mentioned how his family would notice his absace, indicating that they would become extremely concerned about him. Montresor barely acknowledged the fondness Fortunato’s family had for him and showed no sympathy towards them. Instead, he made the niche’s wall grow taller within each passing second. Poe’s “The Cask of the Amontillado” is one of the most beloved stories in American literature. With suspenseful moods and peculiar characters, Poe was able to develop a rich and intriguing plot that has been able to capture the interest of hundreds of readers. In addition, his multi layered characters, such as Montresor, develop depth into the story and give it more emotion.
