An amniocentesis, according to dictionary.com, is a procedure where a doctor, using a hollow needle takes a sample of amniotic fluid from the amniotic sac in a pregnant woman's uterus, by inserting the needle through the abdominal wall. Amniocentesis’ are taken to allow parents to know if their child will have any abnormalities, such as, down syndrome. Doctors would recommend this to the parents if the mother is over the age of 35. This being considered, most of these conditions are not passed down from generation to generation and are completely random. A major decision parents can make during pregnancy is whether the parents would want to keep the child or give it up for adoption. Some parents can’t handle having a child with disabilities
