Amnesty International is the most recognized and well known man rights organization in the world. Amnesty International was born in 1961 when British Lawyer Peter Benenson read a story about two Portuguese students who were jailed for raising their glasses in a toast of freedom. Shocked by the incident, he took action. He published in Appeal in the Observer Newspaper urging readers to write letters on behalf of prisoner conscience around the world. In turns out, his appeal would start an international grass roots campaign to protect human rights. The mission of Amnesty International is a vision in which every person-regardless of race, sexual orientation, religion, ethnicity, or gender identity- enjoy all of the human rights declared by the Universal Declaration of Human rights.
