The Bourne trilogy, specifically Bourne identity focuses on man whom suffers from retrograde amnesia. The film starts with a man found floating in the Mediterranean Sea with two gunshots wounds in his back. He is rescued by nearby fishermen’s, and on this boat happened to be a doctor. The doctor finds and extracts two bullets from Jason’s back and small microchip that was lodged in his hip. After waking up he spends the rest of the film trying to regain his memory given that one cue. The cue that was given was the microfilm which contained an account number for a bank. Retrograde amnesia is amnesia where one suffers from the loss of memories that occurred before some type of trauma. In Jason Bourne’s case, it’s his identity following being shot in the back and left in the sea. Retrograde amnesia is temporally graded, which means remote memories are more easily obtainable than events that occurred before the trauma and events near the event that caused the memory loss may never be recovered. With temporally graded events that caused the memory loss, many are never be recovered. The example for that is Bourne forgot he planned to assassinate Wombosi and the fact he aborted the mission. He also forgot being shot which was the cause of memory loss. In this case film exaggerates retrograde amnesia, because in most cases individuals lose the memories that are closer to the time of trauma. In this case Jason Bourne forgot everything about his previous life. Throughout the movie Jason also, receives flashbacks of his previous life, which caused him to gain his memory quicker than normal. Most individuals will gradually start to decipher flashbacks and gain their memory back. Based on my knowledge, I believe with different methods to jog Jason Bourne’s memory, will eventually help him recall more aspects of his previous life. One factual way Jason Bourne could’ve recovered from retrograde amnesia would be therapy. Therapy could help create new memories but also decipher those flash backs he was having.
