His cowardly act of not helping Hassan during the assault is just one of many. The Taliban turned Afghanistan into such a horrible place that someone even said that, “you couldn’t trust anyone in Kabul anymore-for a fee under threat, people told on each other neighbor on neighbor, child on parent, brother on brother, servant on master, friend on friend” (Hosseini 112). Just because Hassan was Amir’s servant and best friend does not mean that he treated his any differently than he would treat another best friend of the same economic status. Many if not all of Amir’s choices were driven by his emotions in the moment, because after all he was just a child. He never fully thought through the consequences of his actions.
