Amir's Betrayal In The Kite Runner

After Amir damages his relationship with Hassan by betraying him, he starts feeling guilty about the situation, but he does not feel guilt fully until he becomes an adult. Once Amir comes to the realization that he had ruined his relationship with Hassan, Amir starts lambasting him. Amir yells at Hassan not long after the incident occurs, and tells Hassan “to stop harassing [him]” and that he wants Hassan to “go away” (88). Amir does this so that he can stop seeing the reminder of his betrayal, but also because he wants Hassan to get mad at him. Amir is cognizant that Hassan knows of Amir’s betrayal, so Amir wants Hassan to lash out at him. He feels so guilty that he just wants to Hassan to “give [him] the punishment [he] craved” (92), as illustrated when Hassan and Amir attempt to spend time together, and Amir throws a pomegranate at Hassan’s head to try and provoke him, and Hassan ultimately ends up smashing a new …show more content…
When Amir tries to provoke Hassan, he is trying to get a negative reaction out of Hassan. Amir does this so Hassan will betray him, and that way Amir will feel even with Hassan if they both did something to harm the other. Later on in the story, Hassan and Ali stop working for Baba. Not long after that, the war that takes place in the story starts getting too unsafe for Amir and Baba, so they run away to the United States of America. Well trying to make some extra cash in America, Amir and Baba go to a flea market, and well there Amir becomes captivated by a girl of the name Soraya Taheri. Amir finds out later that Baba is going to die of lung cancer, so he decides to have Baba ask Soraya’s father for Soraya’s hand in marriage to Amir, and he accepts. Amir does this so Baba can see him get married before Baba dies. Prior to the wedding, Soraya calls Amir and tells him a story about her messed up past, but Amir does not tell her about
