The core of a debate team are the novices. When I was a novice, I definitely didn’t see myself that way, always aspiring to follow the in role of the awe-inspiring seniors. After two years, I feel like the greatest thing a varsity member could do to help the team, is to take time off and to aid and encourage the novice members. I feel like I’ve matured a lot in this way, trying to be more selfless, and I would love to have the opportunity to have a greater position that allows me to reach out to the novices more. I dislike trying to talk myself up, but I do feel like I’ve had a fair amount of tournament experience in my debate career. Subconsiously, when talking with someone, they are more likely to believe the person if they have credibility. While I believe I’ve done decently at a few tournaments, such as at state tournaments for public forum and national qualifiers for congress, something that is more important is work ethic and the amount of effort and time put into something. I could never have gotten this far without the help of my teammates and coaches, and I want to give back to the team that has done so much for me.
