This journey is considered to be his most successful. Amerigo was not in command, but took charge of this voyage after the ships set sail. On this expedition he discovered present day Rio de Jánerio and Rio de la Plata. Amerigo believed that he had discovered a new continent and this prompted him to write a letter to Florence, where he called this discovery the New World. Amerigo then decided to record his voyages by writing about them in letters. He would go on to sail again in June of 1503. Some accounts state that Amerigo made additional voyages after 1503.
In 1507 a group of scholars from Saint-Die-des-Vosges in France decided to work on a geography book that would be called Cosmographiae Introductio. This book contained large cut-out maps that could be used to make his or her own world globes. One of the scholars that helped produce the book, Martin Waldseemüler, proposed that the newly discovered Brazilian portion of the New World be labeled America after Amerigo Vespucci. America is the female version of Amerigo. Martin intended this gesture to honor the person who discovered the
