Americorps Student Role Model

Improved Essays
City Year is designed to provide support to at-risk students and failing school systems. We attribute to a unique, holistic approach, which we call Whole School Whole Child. It’s based around a group of carefully selected, highly trained young adults called the AmeriCorps members. AmeriCorps members is a group that has a passion in giving back to at risk communities. Members spend 11 months serving hands on service in City Year's partner schools to provide extra support for students, teachers, and the school. They also provide individualized support to at-risk students and establish a positive learning environment. AmeriCorps members are more than just academic helpers. Members become connected to the children. They are not seen as teachers to the children, they are role models and friends. AmeriCorps members are there for the children when they are in need of help with school and emotional issues. Some things AmeriCorps members do are provide 1v1 tutoring before, during, and after school to help students work through academic challenges; run after school clubs and service projects to give students a positive and safe activity to participate in; lead energetic morning greetings for the entire school to create a more encouraging learning environment; take attendance and call late/absent students to encourage them to attend class; send positive messages to the parents to fill them in on the progress that’s being made and organize and lead activities, celebrations, and projects to improve the school and community as a whole. …show more content…
Even before the school year starts, teams of AmeriCorps members are placed in City Year’s partner schools to meet with school administrators and develop student focus lists—based on the ABCs—so that they can start reaching out to the students they’ll be

Each year, school districts are faced with a growing population of students. The issue with this is that many districts have a shortage of school facilities, and they are limited to the amount of money they can spend on each of these facilities. To handle this issue, school districts around the world have adopted a year-round school calendar to ensure they are using these existing school facilities to their full ability. Year-round schooling arranges the breaks differently, causing students to be in school all throughout the year, rather than having three months off in the summer. In addition to maximizing the use of the schools, year-round schooling improves student learning and saves money in the long run.…

Perplexing Coding This picture symbolizes my AP Computer Science class because in this class, I had to come up with different types of codes, like the one shown, to write and format. I chose this image because once I entered this class I knew that coding was exactly what it appeared to be. Complicated. Most of my class was filled with seniors so the first few months I struggled to learn the material that they already knew.…

This weekend, November 20th-22nd I worked a poverty simulation through Mission Waco. I first went through the poverty simulation during my first semester at Baylor with my Poverty in Developing Countries class taught by Janet Dorrell. I have been learning about the causes and effects of poverty for about a year now, but for the first time I was able to look at poverty through a different perspective as I looked for ways in which it affects education. The first portion of the poverty simulation begins on Friday night; everyone is allowed to keep four of their items and is given forty-one dollars of fake money for the weekend expenses, which include, food, clothing, and potentially shelter inside. On Saturday morning, those who paid for breakfast get to eat from an assortment of chips and some coffee.…

Through DC Reads, I had the opportunity to interact with socioeconomically diverse communities by tutoring students in Ward 7. This experience made me particularly interested in poverty and segregation issues that affect childhood development, because living in underserved areas of DC takes an unfair toll on some of the motivated students with whom I worked. For example, Ward 7, where I tutored, is a food desert; hence, many of the students do not receive the nutrition that they need to perform well in school. Additionally, transportation into and out of Ward 7 is less than satisfactory, so poorer families struggle to leave the desert. Thus many students are unfortunately put at a disadvantage compared to their peers who are either in close…

The program “Success for all” (SFA) seems to be one of the most effective in improving the outcome of urban student’s achievement. (Jacob, Ludwig) SFA offers a variety of components that are beneficial and needed to raise urban children’s achievement such as, an early learning program, reading roots (A reading program that integrates phonics with meaning), reading wings (a program based on a school's existing novels, anthologies, or basals, which emphasizes improvement of strategic reading and comprehension skills), one to one tutoring, family support, a facilitator, and professional development. The beauty of a democracy is the accessibility and availability for citizens to voice their opinions. It is especially valuable for citizens to feel free to have their questions, comments and concerns heard. Having spaces where there is communication between the public and private groups is essential to retain a cohesive community. By public, I refer to John Dewey’s interpretation of these terms; to any who are effected either directly or indirectly by actions of private parties, and by private, meaning those with the power to change or alter their environment. Public school board meetings are such spaces.…
