13 April 2016 America's Responsibility Winston Churchill once said, "Where there is great power, there is great responsibility." By enforcing the regime change that brought down Saddam Hussein, America saves 60,000 lives every year (Alexander). By invading Iraq, America has helped facilitate the Iraq economy's nominal GDP growth by 317% (World). By acting forcefully in the world, America has spread democracy to over 4 continents. Ever since the Spanish-American War in 1898, America has assumed a position of great power. One reason for the strength of the armed forces is that America spends more money on its military than the next twelve countries combined (IISS). This expenditure makes it nigh on impossible for other countries to compete with the US, due to the difference in resources, which are in turn used to great effect. From 2004 to 2014, America was able to use drones to eliminate 2,943 suspected terrorists (Serle). To further show the strength of the American military, it ranks first in a military strength index, almost doubling the score of the United Kingdom (Natella). As a result of having the largest military in the world, America automatically assumes a position of world power. Many state that since America is not ranked highly in education or employment rates, it's not the world's leading force. However, the true determiner of power in this world is how strong one's army is. The army is the enforcer of nations and is the driving force behind the level of strength any country has.
