America’s Melodies: An Analysis of Patriotism in Lyrics
Since the creation of the genre in the late seventeenth century, patriotic music has demonstrated the expression of admiration and devotion for one’s country, boosted general moral in times of crisis, and rekindled pride in who we are, and what we represent, as a great nation. (Rhein 1). In an effort to increase nationalistic views, there are several qualities used throughout many historical melodies. Words such as; unity, pride, and freedom are consistently utilized in attempt to purvey a sense of patriotism within almost any genre of music.
Before the American Revolution, there small library of musical works, which consisted primarily of drinking songs and hymns. The people in the colonies had little motivation to create their own culture, as they had taken England’s cultural traditions with them (Daddona 2).
