Can you afford to go to college? Can you handle working, studying, and attending classes every day? David Leonhardt, a writer for the New York Times, wrote the article, America’s Great Working Class College. This article explains the many issues college students face today and what the best kind of college is for the modern student. Leonhardt also mentions that low-income students may not be getting the best education because of the way the education system works. I agree with Leonhardt that our nation needs to concentrate on improving the education system, especially for the underprivileged students.
Leonhardt makes many arguments about the way the education system is handled in our country and he grants his readers his personal opinions from the outcomes he has witnessed. Many times Leonhardt points out that colleges who accept students from impoverished or modest backgrounds suffer budget cuts. I agree that education is an important part of a person's life and I also think that they should be able to attend any school they want regardless of their monetary background. Leonhardt makes many good points about how we handle what school gets how much. For example, the poorly performing schools get less than the better performing schools. Leonhardt states, “ Universities that educate students from modest backgrounds face big challenges, particularly state budget cuts. But many of them are performing much better than their new stereotype suggests” (Leonhardt 1). This makes it more difficult for these schools to better help their students succeed.
