America's Got Talent

Isabela Ceely When I was around 8 years old, I discovered a love for those reality talent competition shows like; America’s Got Talent, American Idol, and X-Factor. I would watch these people; young, old, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, gay, straight, and everything in between, try to do something I felt I could do, but was too shy to try. Then at age 11, I saw Anna Graceman belt out the infamous Alicia Keys song “If I Ain’t Got You.” She was my age, and better than any other person who sang. I finally said “I could do that” to my mother. I will never forget what my mother, the realist who notoriously has always brought me down from the clouds, said next. “No, you can’t. She’s amazing, you’re just eh.” I wasn’t surprised she said that and that wasn’t what I’ll remember forever, it was this piece of advice. “She practices and tries. You need to get out there if you want to do that. You used to sing at church by yourself all the time, and now you have stage fright for some reason. All you have to do is try.” That stuck with me for years and it wasn’t until 7th grade I made a change. There was a teacher named Mrs. Yost, she was a really passionate musician who wanted the kids to have the best with what little we had to offer. She had gotten a …show more content…
My parents gave me a John Lennon themed nursery. My mobile played an acoustic “Imagine” and my walls were decorated with drawings done by John Lennon, that was sold in mass production 19 years after his untimely death. My first Christmas gift was the 1 album. I would sing and sing all the time as a child. Most kids would watch the same movie over and over every day, we all had one. Maybe it was Cinderella or Beauty and the Beast; well, mine was Hairspray. I loved that musical and on my first day of school, I thought life was like a musical and started singing down the stairs to my kitchen. My brother then told me to shut up and I learned life isn’t as fun as the movies make it

When I entered the education landscape, I was foreign to the ideas and the nature of those that saw themselves as something more than just a student. I never thought that those students that sat behind the deteriorating desks could educate themselves. Ergo, as I transferred from middle school to high school, I began to discover those students that were seen as insignificant if I wanted to succeed within what was previously taught to me as the “real world”. Yet, it was through those encounters with those strange and unique individuals where I was exposed to something pure. I remember the first time I was ever exposed to music as an educational structure for me to discover myself in.…

It was the second week of school when we first met the string orchestra teacher; no one gave her a schedule. Her curly ginger hair, piercings, and her tattoos made her look kind of “intimidating”, but she was a very fun and laid back person once we got to know her. Throughout the year, she had taught us a lot like how to vibrato correctly, and we had played an ample amount of music that year as well. I worked hard to improve my music skills that year because we were going…
