The America I believe in. On January 20th, 1981 Ronald Reagan during his speech A warrior's pledge said “The price for this freedom at times has been high, but we have never been unwilling to pay that price.” I feel this has never been any more true than now. Judith Ortiz Cofer’s essay, “The Myth of the Latin Woman”, shows us the different stereotypes that she personally had to deal with over the years. Growing up in the United States and being born in Puerto Rico made her want to “belong” as she resented the stereotype that her Hispanic appearance brought on. One main difference between Puerto Rico and the United States that she goes into great detail about is the culture clash of clothing styles. Cofer gets the readers to consider what it would be like to have grown up in the United States being from a different culture. Judith Ortiz is a Latin American that speaks out against stereotyping.…

Many writers post articles about this new generation destroying department stores, diamonds, golf, and more. Jean M. Twenge’s article titled “Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation?” appears to take on the same point of view. However, she focused on behaviors and emotional health. She avoided bashing the post-Millennial generation (referred to as iGen) and instead studied the effects of the smartphone. Twenge completed research to show that, while physically safer, the new generation of teenagers is suffering mentally.…

In his speech entitled “A More Perfect Union,” Barack Obama asserts that while we may differ from one another, Americans also have some important things in common. For example, Obama states that “…we may have different stories, but we hold common hopes…” and that “…we may not look the same and we may not have come from the same place, but we all want to move in the same direction.” I agree with Obama’s claims because everyone wants to succeed in life. No matter how or where a person was raised, they always dreamed about a fantastic future. In addition, everyone wants to be able to get to a point in their life where they are completely satisfied with what they have.…

What makes America great and relatively unique is that as an American you have the freedom to choose what to do with your life. It may not seem like a big deal but when you consider the little freedoms that people experience in other countries, the power that you have over your life is comparatively gargantuan. With this power we can either add to society in a good way through hard work, respect, and spreading the idea of equality or we can bring it to it’s knees through prejudice, misdeed, and selfishness. Lately we seem to have taken the path of the latter.…

Two hundred and forty years ago, this great nation was brought into existence, which came with a notion for liberty, equality and a dream of growth and determination. Every citizen who is either born or choose to become of this this country, often referred to as the “Land of Opportunity”, has the ability to do or be anything they wish if they put their mind and heart to it. As a child of two immigrants who came to America with nothing, this phrase truly resonates with me since it shows that America can allow people to be who they were meant. Due to this, a sense of gratitude comes about and pride of one’s nation. A word that is almost synonymous with Americanism is Freedom, which truly embodies this nation since we are free to do what we want,…
