Andrew Leonard’s “Black Friday: Consumerism Minus Civilization” explains how Black Friday has gone too far in American society. He states that the nation has gone mad with Black Friday and companies know that people are so chaotic that they use the craziness as a tactic to lure customers in. Leonard has found videos and commercials online that are created to be crazy. Although Leonard knows Black Friday has unethical qualities, he does remind the reader that it is a huge day for the U.S economy. To him it is a way of getting back at the 1%’ers and capitalism at its finest.…

Today, when we open our mailbox the first thing that comes to our view is 50% off in some store or next visa or “0% APR till end of 2018” and many Americans consider these ideas, because the second refinanced mortgage payment is due soon. The total amount Americans spend each year amounts to nearly two-thirds of the nation’s $14 trillion gross domestic product (“Consumerism”). Today’s people are swiping away their values and culture all in the pursuit of what American history found upon: consumerism. Society puts pressure on us to keep up with the latest trends in the market; having the biggest car, buying the next mansion in town, and having babies.…

The book is about observing American culture from an outsider's perspective, and comparing it to other cultures from across the globe. In this book, American culture refers to pattern and behavior of the mainstream. In this book, American culture mainly refers to white males for they make up the majority of America, however, it is not exclusive to them. This book is not about Americans changing the way of think when interactions with foreigners, but instead to learn and see their own patterns.…

The American Dream “All men are created equal...” as stated in the Declaration of Independence, which entitles people to certain inalienable rights such as life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The American Dream is attainable as many people who have migrated to America in hope and search for a better life for their families and a chance to obtain life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. In the passage, “The So-Called American Dream,” the author implies that rampant, unchecked consumerism has evolved into a destructive societal force which is both a true and untrue statement as people are responsible for the way that they live their life, the way they go about their liberty, and the way that they pursue their happiness. If one wants…

In A Consumers' Republic: The Politics of Mass Consumption in Postwar America, author Lizabeth Cohen focuses on how the American culture of abundance and consumption influenced many political, socioeconomic and cultural changes in the decades proceeding the end of World War II. She argues that mass consumerism is deeply rooted in the modern American experience. Cohen first uses the prologue of A Consumers' Republic to introduce her own personal story, having grown up during the beginnings of the age of mass consumption. She claims that the purpose of including her personal story was not to demonstrate it's uniqueness, but instead insinuates that it was something along the lines of a common experience in the middle of the 20th century.…

In this week’s lecture the theme of choice was “Consumerism and American Values”. When first hearing the word consumerism, I tend to think of many things such as the economy, money, shopping, and etc. I also think of supply and demand and producer to consumer relationships. I thought it was a very interesting topic because; Walmart was the target for this section. In the first essay titled “The Walmart You Don’t Know” the author attempts to persuade the audience that Walmart is nothing but a capitalistic company.…

The specific topic of Asadorian’s article entitled “The Rise and Fall of Consumer Culture” argues that consumerism has been embedded in our culture, to such an extent that we view it as a “natural” way of life. The purpose of this article seems to be that humans need to realize that our culture of consumerism has everything to do with our treatment of the environment, and it tries to explain exactly in what ways institutions, media, and the government have contributed to this unsustainable state of our society. In the article Assadourian makes his argument that mankind needs to transform its culture to focus on sustainability. His main thesis is that these patterns of consumption are neither sustainable nor innate manifestations of human nature,…

There are so many different cultures in the world from Japanese cultures, to Chinese cultures, to even our very own American cultures. I will talk about American culture, even though there are many sub-cultures in the American culture I will try to narrow it down. American cultures for us is the normal things we do; we tend to think that everyone does the same things that we do in our everyday life. For example, from driving on the right side of the road to even eating with forks and knives.
