In July 26, 1990 the United States Congress passed the Americans with Disabilities Act, written by Senator Tom Harkin and then passed by President George H. W. Bush (ADA, 2011). Since the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, discrimination against the disabled has slowed and many disabled Americans have become employed (ADA, 2011). Many changes have been made to accommodate the disabled. There are several new regulations for the workplace that helps the disabled get fair treatment and be open to the same opportunities as others. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 was passed to stop discrimination against people with disabilities not only in everyday places but also in the workplace. Since then, the numbers have only increased. Over 78% of Americans with disabilities now have jobs, and many of those left unemployed are incapable of working (ADA, 2011). Since then several regulations have been passed to help accommodate people with disabilities. Many public accommodations that ensured Americans with disabilities have the same rights as everyone else were passed as well. Since the passing of the ADA many other great things have been accomplished. Some accomplishments include the disabled getting jobs, receiving the help needed, and finding accommodations that help them be included (Gold, 2011). The main thing was to stop or at least slow down the discrimination rate. The U.S. Department of Justice has helped to vastly increase the amount of accommodations for the disabled. Until 1968 children who had disabilities could not attend preschool. Before the Act was passed, Activist with disabilities protested by blocking new construction sites to places inaccessible with their wheelchairs. When Reagan vetoed the 1982 bill for the Handicapped Children Education Act many Americans were upset, so picketers wore Ronald Reagan masks.
Before this law was passed there was no public transportation for the disabled. Now, all public transportations must have access for the disabled. This also includes buildings, facilities, and restaurants. there are two agencies in the department of labor to enforce this part of the ADA.
The ADA prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in employment, transportation, communications, and government requirements for employment policy. The Americans with Disabilities Act also established telecommunications relay services (DISABILITIES, 2009). The ODEP (Office of Disability Employment policy) provides publications and other technical basic requirements for the ADA (Americans, 2010).
