Americana World Community Center Reflection

Decent Essays
The Americana World Community Center was an organization that I was involved in during High School. It is a nonprofit in Louisville, KY that helps refugees, immigrants, and the underserved populations. During my time at Americana I helped the kids with school work and played different games with them. I'm very passionate about this program because I love how much it helps out all the struggling kids and families. It gives the kids a safe place to learn and have fun, and it was amazing to see how excited some the kids got to see me. One of the best things that I loved to see was coming back the following summer and seeing how much some of the kids had grown. It was just great to see how well some them were doing and how much this organization

I have donated time in my city, state, country and internationally. Through the many opportunities that I have had for community service, I have been able to broaden my views, and look outside my community at how others experience our world. I have visited very diverse communities ranging from the inner city of Detroit, MI to a small, economically depressed village in Honduras, to the mountains of Pennsylvania and inside homes very different from mine in my own…

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

About 15 years ago, I was employed as a Program Liaison and Group Leader for a wonderful non-profit organization in South Philadelphia. This organization focused on providing resources and supports to low income families within an inner city environment. The program operated weekly and was housed in a local elementary school. Usually, students enrolled in the school would utilize our resources services for after-school programming and their parents would request additional assistance such as furniture vouchers, food vouchers, and other social service related supports. While employed at the nonprofit organization I was instrumental in creating several programs that enhanced the scope of our organization, our demographics, and enrollment statistics.…
