She was the founder of The American Women’s Physical Therapeutic Association. The name for physical therapy has changed twice over the years with the current name for physical therapy being American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) (Curtis Physical Therapy 6-7). Since the profession of physical therapy plays an important role in health care delivery, physical therapists have many responsibilities.
Physical therapists, also known as PTs, play a major role in rehabilitation. A physical therapist is someone who helps injured or ill people improve their movement and manage their pain. They provide care to people of all ages who have functional problems, so the work of a physical therapist varies by the type of injury the patient has (“Physical Therapist”). Physical therapist’s duties include reviewing patients’ medical history and any referrals from doctors or surgeons, diagnosing patients’ dysfunctional movements, setting up a treatment plan for patients, easing patients’ pain, evaluating patients’ progress, and educating patients on what to expect from and how to best cope with the recovery process (“Physical Therapist”). They are trained to use a variety of different techniques to care for their patients. “These techniques include applying heat and cold and using assistive devices such as crutches, wheelchairs, and walkers and equipment, such as adhesive electrodes which apply electric stimulate to treat injuries and pain” (“Physical Therapist”).
