The first American Wirehair cast was born in Verona, New York. The baby kitten's coat was wiry and short. He had crimped whiskers. His parents were both regular looking domestic short-hairs.
The kitten was so unusual looking a cat breeder bought him. He bred him to a normal looking domestic short-hair female. The kittens have wiry coats. He bred the male to another female and the kittens also had wiry coats.

It was determined the kittens wiry coats were unique and they were not related to the Devon Rex or Cornish breeds.

The American Wirehair is medium sized with a muscled body. Their ears are rounded, and the head is longer.

The American Wirehair cat will come in all colors and coat patterns. Some of them have coats that are wirier
