Without dismissing the positive aspects of arranged marriages, the modern Western method of selecting mates has many advantages. For one, under the Western system there is a much larger pool of potential spouses from which to choose. Further, since a system of arranged marriage usually involves family feedback, if an individual’s family holds racist or other intolerant views these would be reflected in approved marriage candidates. Marrying based on freedom of choice helps ensure that one generation’s prejudices are not doomed to afflict their offspring. In a larger sense, a society that encourages people to marry for love is a society that will evolve over time, as races, classes and cultures have the chance to blend.…
The proposal is then read out orally to the bride’s family, since it is already comprehended that the couples are going to be married, the proposal is not usually rejected at this point. The groom also pays an amount of money called “owo ori iyawo” meaning bride price and this goes directly to the bride. When various introductions have been made, the proposal is accepted on the spot then they make arrangements for the second process of the marriage which is the ENGAGEMENT. THE ENGAGMENT is the part of the occasion whereby the bride and groom are tied together traditionally based on the Yoruba culture, this also takes place at the bride’s house and again they are responsible for the refreshments and other necessary preparations for the occasion.…
Based off of this I believe that the performance of a husband and wife for loved marriages do differ from those arranged marriages. Loved marriages work (sometimes) because both individuals are in love and they have come together to build and grow in a relationship together. Arranged marriages are based off of religons and both individuals may or may not know who they are marrying until the wedding day. I believe that both type of marriages could work and both marriages do have a chance of not continuing. I would say that arranged marriages are arranged and that is for their own religion, even though they may not love the person and they may be suffering i feel they would have to stay in the marriage.…
According to domestic ideology, real consent in terms of marriage comes from love, and people should choose their marriage partners based on character as opposed to marrying…
In the article “How to Save Marriage in America” the author Richard Reeves discusses marriage in America and how marriage has changed over the years. Reeves tells is that American marriage is not dying, children raised by married parents do better on a range of educational, social and economic outcomes, lack of parenting in poor populations and that there is a lack of marriageable men. I agree with Reeves first two points. I disagree with his idea that there is a lack of marriageable men. I believe that marriage has simply changed over the years and conformed to the 21st century and the ideas of our society today.…
Many belive the notion that arranged marriages are wrong. It is expressed by many in society, that the idea of arranged marriages is, in fact, a denial of rights and freedom to the concerned parties. On…
Marriage which is widely defined as the legally or formally recognized union of two people as partners in a personal relationship has been an integral part of the world. It has also been channel where individuals come together and legitimately demonstrate and show care and affection towards each other. This has made marriage a form of institution that provides the platform for people to come together for the purpose of love, goals, relationships etc. In his writing on “The Deinstitutionalization of American Marriage” Cherlin explains that marriage is an institution that defines partner’s behavior.…
With assisted marriages, since parents know their child best, it is the parent’s job to find their kids a spouse. Those that were going to be married were able to voice their views on what they wanted. Although arranged marriages tend to be more successful than that of regular relationships (Kolker 71) honestly I have never liked the idea of an arranged marriage so I can’t agree with this custom at all. In my opinion I believe that humans should be able to get married to who they want on their own terms, in their own…
On the other hand, arrange marriages are defective in a person life due to lack of freedom because people don't have a freedom to choose their life partner for their life which can cause the breaking the relationship early. According to the article "Lessons From an Arranged Marriage," the author states that "You can stay with someone for your whole life, even if you are completely mismatched" (Kollas 2). Likewise, in arrange marriages people are not aware of a person strength and weaknesses because a family chooses a partner for their children. Therefore, if a partner is not comfortable with husband/wife still, they have to stay together for their family reputation. Also, they don't have freedom to elect their own life decision by themselves.…
Traditional marriage has been changed and developed in many other types of marriage such as same- sex marriage, cohabitation, or blended families. The reason why it changed is because people tend to express their feeling and require the equal in their gender. The same- sex marriage is adapted by the people’s trend. The same-sex marriage is not only giving people the freedom to express their actual personality but also giving them the happiness to be by themselves. In the essay, “More Equal Than Others”, Rebecca Solnit describes the advantage of same sex marriage which is not only equal in standing but also in appearance.…
In the eighteen-century woman had to please her husband with no question asked. In certain centuries the woman had to be married to the partner her father or her parents choose for her, which is called arranged marriage “Cultures featuring arranged marriages as the societal norm believe that a person has a responsibility to parents and relatives, and they are obligated to marry the person that their loved…
Through the essays, “Us and Them”, “Matrimony with a Proper Stranger”, “An Indian Father’s Plea”, and “Dave Barry Does Japan”, the authors prove that a person’s culture informs the way he or she views others and the world through traditions, marriage, education, and communication. The way a person views the world can have a lot to do with their culture, and cultural background. Tradition for example, can have a major impact on the way someone views the world around them. In the essay “Us and Them”, David Sedaris goes into detail about how the concept of going trick-or-treating “...was one of the things you were suppose to learn simply by being alive…” (75).…
Parents involvement can lead to a successful marriage, so American should adopt to the idea of arranged marriages and have parents involve in their childs’ marriage. One of the most important thing that the parents do to make the marriage successful is to “screen for deal breakers.” They search for the best spouse for their child. Background information are looked by parents and see if it meets their expectations satisfactorily. Showing that parental involvement cares about who their child is marrying and whether that person can bring…
This literature review will focus on the differences and similarities between free choice marriages in the U.S. and arranged marriages in India. Concepts that will be looked at with greater detail are: how love emerges and marital happiness in India, wellness and satisfaction in both India and the U.S., mate selection among younger generations, and how social institutions affect the decision of arranged marriage among the youth. These two cultures both have very different beliefs and ideas on how marriage works properly. The research being done has the intent to help us become more accepting towards each other’s reasoning on marriage and to provide a better understanding on why each culture choses to accept the marriage traditions in which they participate in. The studies also provides a greater knowledge and benefit…
Inevitably most people in this country would agree the goal of marriage is to be happy and have a romantic and sexual relationship with your partner. In many places across the world love is almost unimaginable. Many women have arranged marriages every year, but that's not to say they all wanted to get married. While modern day society believes that one should find their partner based off of love and attraction, in Afghanistan majority of women are not given that luxury causing them to feel verbally abused, restricted in an educational way, also conflicted with adjusting to new cultures differing from their own background. Not to say that all arranged marriages end up tragic, but there have been many that've been a recipe for disaster.…
