How the Pursuit of Profit Drives the Test Prep Industry As many people are aware, America is a capitalist society motivated by profit. However, Alexandra Robbins describes in Chapter 13 of her novel, “The Overachievers: The Secret Lives of Driven Kids”, a specific industry that is driven by the pursuit of profit and that is the test prep industry. Before the new SAT was released the College Board “insisted that students’ scores could not be improved by coaching” (Robbins 299). That didn’t stop places like Kaplan and Princeton Review from making money “prepping” anxious teens.…

Daniel Eidelstein is presenting the case that today’s obsession with standardized testing is causing stress in students, and is affecting their overall learning potential. He goes on to explain the detrimental anxiety and pressure the tests put on the students, and through quoting a professor in psychology at the University of Columbia, concludes that the tests are encouraging students to improve test scores, but for the wrong reasons, resulting in negative consequences both mentally and academically. The author uses formal language to express his facts and statistics on the matter, which leads me to believe that the target of this article would be people supporting students in their education (teachers, school boards, parents dedicated to…

I used to get worried that I would not do well on the tests, before I would get the test, I would get worried that I would forget important facts or that I did not study enough or what I was supposed to study in the first place to be prepared for the test. Now that I have beat the dragon it does not worry me that i will not do good on a test. I still do the same studying before a test, I read the chapter, do the questions at the end of each section, and read my notes over…

My heart pounded. My knees shook. I feared the other twenty students sitting around me could hear my heart leaping out of my chest as I read each question on the SAT. When I looked around the room, I realized they all had the same look of terror on their faces as I did. This test determined the rest of our futures; whether we’d get into the college of our dreams or not.…

Testing students in subjects such as science and social studies is not fair to all students. Since 25%-40% of students get test anxiety, even if they study and know their stuff, they still blank out, freeze up, zone out, or feel so nervous that they cannot write the test. Students who are highly test-anxious score about 12% less than other students who don’t get test anxiety. Equally students don’t always have time to study and memorize everything before a test. Not only…

Cherry then goes on to add: "Test anxiety can also become a vicious cycle. After experiencing anxiety during one exam, students may become so fearful about it happening again that they actually become even more anxious during the next exam. After repeatedly enduring test anxiety, students may begin to feel helpless to change their situation. " This is why standardized testing is a problem in the Public education school system within the United…

One of the most the most stressful tests a scholar can take, the SAT brings back memories of anxiety for many adults. While this might seem a more idle threat than that of mental health problems, it is still part of a larger problem, and a bigger picture. Students attend school, or are intended to attend school, for the betterment of themselves –and by extension, their community. With large tests starting with younger and younger grades, it’s no wonder many students have high test anxiety. As Bloom states about testing anxiety “While other forms of fear tended to decrease with age, text anxiety typically increased as pupils progressed through school”, in other words, while a child scared of snakes may love them by the time they’re adults, a child scared of tests –and failing tests—may, and likely will, continue to be terrified of them through adulthood. Not should this fear raise a cause for concern, but the fact that many students do not remember the significance of historical events, or know different ideologies, because they only remembered the answer for a test they have long since taken, should also be something addressed.…

if the student does not fit into the group, he or she will not able to be motivated or to achieve deep-learning due to the extraneous cognitive load that needed to deal with issues that are not related to the learning task itself, especially with the test anxiety (Woolfolk, 2015, p. 301). In case of evaluation, instructors must evaluate each student individually in order to design productive teaching methods for students overall with various levels of cognition because with collaborative testing, instructors cannot measure who did what and how. Furthermore, most of the major exams during school years require individual work, for example, students must take SAT alone unless they are in a special circumstance. Thus, it is more important to help those students to learn how to manage their anxiety during the…

As with most things in life, tests are easier when someone first takes the necessary steps to prepare for them. A crucial component to preparing for a test is by incorporating successful strategies in order to study the test material. My study habits have been continuously refined throughout my tenure as both a high school student and then as a college student. For example, in high school, I used to just repeatedly read the study guide or notes until I felt that I was adequately prepared to take the exam or quiz. This was typically enough to help me obtain an A on the tests, but upon entering college, I was shocked about how different the tests were, and I forced myself to learn new strategies that would help me succeed in my endeavors.…
