American Style Smooth Foxtrot

For my ballroom dance activity, I went to Capital Dance Center on May 9, 2017 (7PM), which was in Rancho Cordova, California. Alexey Baykov instructed a one-hour group session of American Style Smooth Foxtrot. When I arrived at the location, I was glad that I dressed appropriately for the event because the other leads were dressed in dress shirts, slacks, and dance shoes too. There were six females and five other males dancing, and they all seemed to be middle age. I was the youngest person there, and the dancers were definitely far more experience than I was. However, I did not hesitate and was ready to dance Foxtrot. By taking this class, I do feel more confident about ballroom dancing. I recalled only doing the slow dance once during High …show more content…
I could dance with a new partner, and collaborate to perform the steps taught. Early in the semester, I would constantly look at my feet to see if I was executing the steps properly, but I rarely do that anymore. In addition, I learned some new steps during my dance activity, and it felt like I was beginning the semester all over again. I was not well coordinated with the new steps, and needed numerous attempts to accomplish a routine. However, I remained calm and did the best I can, and constantly tried to fix my flaws and misunderstanding of the steps, which leads to my instable coordination. About 20 minutes into the dancing, I had sweats dripping down my face, and I was working hard to learn and execute the dance to the best of my ability. Although I do not actively use ballroom dance as my physical activity, I feel that ballroom is a great activity for physical exercise, and there are additional physiological benefits …show more content…
The dance itself provides two people to dance together, and requires social communication through speaking, body language, symbols. At the beginning of the class, I did not know how to distinguish the different type of dances that are under the umbrella of ballroom dance. However, I slowly picked up on the different dances: Foxtrot, Swing, Hustle, Waltz, etc., and can now distinguished the differences and unique styles of each dance. If someone talked to me about ballroom dance, I would have little insight or knowledge about the subject matter because I never really learned about it or had practical experience myself. Now, I can at least talk about ballroom dance at the novice level, and have an appreciation for the dance

Over the next few years, I would run to class, frazzled and panting, hair half up, to spend the entirety of it staring at the clock, waiting to get home in time for dinner. The school moved people up to the next level every year, so I had no motive to get better at Ballet. Don't get me wrong, I loved how controlled and structured ballet could be. How it takes extremely complex movements and makes them look simple and elegant. I just hated the environment I had to be in to do it.…

The way this dance was, you had to enter the ballroom floor with a specific way of stepping to the beat using your heels, but also like ice skating in a way. Dancing wasn’t as easy as it is now, well for some people. Some other types of dances were Jigs and reels, which as I mentioned before enslaved people and lower class white people would use these methods of dancing, but so did the Virginians. When you would dance “Jigs” it required to only dance with one person and partner, for the “Reels” you could have as much as six people dancing. When it came to teaching and learning the dance, it wasn’t as easy as it seemed.…

As I stated in my midterm, setting goals for myself only allow me to become a stronger dancer. This semester in Ballet II, I personally believe that I have grown tremendously as a dancer in ballet. With this being my first semester in Ballet II, I had a few ups and downs throughout the class. With this being the case, I set three different goals for myself so that I could focus on fully reaching my potential the areas. These goals included: fully executing my petite battements and completing a double left pirouette.…

“When your music begins, you will be in competition mode.” I took a deep breath, it was showtime. I was introduced to the world of competitive dance in August of 2011 and ever since, dance has been the outlet for all of my emotions. I started off as a shy little girl who hid in the corner, barely extending her limbs as I attempted to mock those in front of me. As time elapsed, I persevered through challenging ten hour practices and the taunting of my peers.…

It was a Friday night in the middle of August, and the cotillion court had just finished the photoshoot. We were all by the door, preparing ourselves for the courts’ grand entrance. There was so much commotion going on, with the guys fixing each other's’ bows, the girls making sure their heels were on right and that their hair looked fine, and the last minute guests were checked in. The waltz was to be immediately followed after the entrance, so we were all getting ready to dance. This was the first dance of the night, and there was so much built up anticipation.…

In the early days of the 20th century, communication was only identified as a physical activity and was limited to face-to-face interactions. This restricted communication made interaction limited and hence, social activities and relationships thrived on physical meet ups. Owing to the shortcoming that arose as a result of inaccessible means of communication, several types of social meet up events were designed around this fact. The elite families of the Victorian era, arranged events like charity balls and dinners, quadrillions and cotillions to catch up with those who belonged to their social circle and often times to highlight a lifestyle of much glitz and glamour.…

I think I could also improve by watching my fellow classmates and seeing how they transition through the steps as well. It also comes from knowing the combination well, too. If I feel confident in the combination I can focus on the transitions rather than what I am doing. This goes hand in hand with another goal of mine, to be able to understand and pick up combinations faster. Sometimes in class, I am doing unfamiliar exercises and steps so it is difficult for me to truly understand what I am doing.…

From my last year of study, there has not been much that has changed from my perception of ballet. So far, I noticed that I made progress in improving my technique as well as having a clearer focus while learning the combinations in class. I want to improve in whatever way possible to make sure that I can keep on top of my technique, especially since I look forward to striving forward through this semester as a continuation of last semester. On the first day back of the new semester, I already knew that I wanted to break some of the bad habits that I had and wanted to find any way possible to make the goals a primary focus. Even though I have my strengths and weaknesses, I want to further myself this semester to grow as a dancer by breaking some old habits that are holding me back.…

When I went to the wonderful performance at Pierce College I experienced a whole new perspective on dancing. The concert had many types of students performing mixed dance projects of all types like solos and duets. There was an average size of one to eight dancers per project which made it the ideal size for the concert. I really enjoyed the creativity and effort put into this performance.…
