American Sniper The Movie Essay

American Sniper (2014), directed by Clint Eastwood, has been a film of much controversy. Many people believe that the film is propaganda glorifying war and American patriotism is being used as an excuse for war. Some were uncomfortable with the fact that the film shows women and children engaged in war and being shot down as enemies. The unfortunate truth is that women and children are indeed apart of urban warfare. To deny this fact is to deny the reality of war. No one knows this to be true better than the soldiers who are actually fighting on the front lines everyday. American Sniper does not aim to glorify war and promote it as a good thing. This patriotism is too commonly used to manipulate and conform the American public. For example, it is quite common to see advertisements for a pick-up truck to be pitched using patriotism as a lure, usually saying things like, “Real Americans drive this truck.” Similarly, this same patriotism is used to gain support and justify military intervention in other countries. America prides itself on having the strongest military in the world. Unfortunately, there are those who see this military as a solution for everything. And because America has the strongest military in the world, the general population is more likely to support the war effort. They take pride in their country’s strength and wish to have it displayed to the world. But for some reason, people cannot seem to realize what it is they are supporting. When they agree to war, they are not agreeing to just fight and defeat the enemy. They are agreeing to send our people abroad into combat. This is not to say that war is never necessary. Sometimes war is unavoidable. It just seems, these days, that war is the go-to solution but people do not seem to be aware what that actually
