Essay On Cultural Literacy

American Sign Language, body language, English, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, and a myriad of programming languages; these are all of the things in which, at one time or another, I attempted to gain literacy. I have always been fascinated with the way people communicate and interact with one another, knowingly or not. Communication, however, is not merely limited to the spoken or written word. In fact, a lot of what we encounter in everyday life does not fall into the traditional realm of language. There are many other things that factor into understanding our society, including culture, relationships, beliefs, and just overall outlooks on life. When we pair these factors with a language, and understand them, we have a cultural literacy. Literacy, at its core, is merely competency in doing something. This can be reading, writing, speaking, dancing, or any number of other things. Literacy has played a defining role in my life, molding me into who I am, supporting me where I am now, and guiding me towards my future. Literacy has greatly impacted my past, molding me into who I am today. When I was younger, I read incessantly. Sometimes, I even read two books in one day, each numbering a few hundred pages. I stayed like this until I reached high school, …show more content…
I mentioned previously that my majors will be Spanish and Communications. With programs of study like those, there is a high chance that I will find a job that revolves around literacy. This includes the traditional literacy, reading and writing, and being literate in terms of culture, relationships, and beliefs. Furthermore, if I opt to go to law school, which is a serious possibility, I will regularly use both types of literacy. Legal documents are notorious for their use of confusing syntax and jargon, yet another type of literacy to learn. Nevertheless, I am certain of one thing, the use of my literacy will not escape me in this

I was surprised to read how the term literacy has changed over time and all of the meaning that it now holds. “Literacy has morphed to characterize someone’s level of knowledge or competence in a particular area or subject,” according to Vacca (2014, p. 12). Reading and writing were the first concepts that would come to my mind when thinking of the word literacy, therefore, I was shocked to read how “complex and multidimensional the concept of literacy”(Vacca, 2014, p. 12) has become. Computer literacy, digital literacy, information literacy, media literacy, and health literacy are just a few examples of this concept. As society’s ability to communicate has evolved, so has the concept of literacy.…

My Struggles of Literacy and How I Work to Fix Them Literacy, in my eyes, is the way of sharing ideas, facts, and emotion. Emotional literacy such as poetry has had a big role in what I read today. They can express things in simplicity and make it so vivid at the same time. Any book can have the ability to change a perspective on a certain topic or helps me acknowledge the things around me. I never intended to be an illegal smuggler. Seriously. But when four-year-old me found out that preschool had "naptimes" (in which apparently nobody napped, making it a waste of time to me), I decided to take matters into my own hands, with drastic measures. The next day, my top-secret contraband came in with me, in the form of a book. At 1:30, while everyone else did whatever preschoolers do during naptime, the book snuck out of its carefully concealed hiding place and I disappeared into its pages.…

As far back as I can remember, reading has always been a tremendous part of my life. Growing up, my mother introduced reading as one of the most important skills I could learn. Throughout my childhood, my entire family constantly incorporated reading into my daily schedule by helping me complete word searches, reading books, or rehearsing the ABC’s. Every night before bed, my mother and I would read a page out of a children’s bible book called Blessings Every Day as opposed to the classic Green Eggs and Ham. Reading has taught me how to exercise my imagination, how to effectively communicate with others, and relieves my stress.…

Cultural competency is the ability to have an understanding of different cultures points of views and world knowledge. It is important to realize that although people will strive to have cultural competency, it will always be something we are moving toward, not something we can have completely for all cultures. Furthermore, people must understand how their own culture can change their view of other people and create biases that may not be noticeable without this culturally competent awareness. Being open to and learning about how other people view and experience the world and events in it is essential to cultural competency and a necessary part of working with others (Lee, 2006). As counselors, cultural competency is even more notably essential.…
