The American Revolution started in 1765 and was one of the most influential times in the history of the Americas. England had taxed colonist long before the Revolution but it was the placement of higher taxes and taxes on goods not taxed in the past that contributed to the upheaval. The imposition of taxes was only a small portion of the reason why the Revolutionists chose to overthrow British rule. Cultural differences including religious diversity, unequal laws, and unnecessary and unfair taxation resulted in mayhem between colonists and British Parliament. The revolution could have been avoided only if the British had gotten their act together sooner and compromised with the colonists. The British would hear of no such thing, making the fate of the revolution lie in their hands. With that being said, the American Revolution was necessary for colonists’ escape of Parliaments unlawful rule and enact their own set of laws and regulations.
The American Revolution was not quite as revolutionary as some think. Initially, there was little change in society and only a large shift in power. There was no immediate change in society after the American Revolution. Some colonists and slaves were under the impression the revolution was to allow them more liberty. But after the Revolution, slavery continued for another 100 years, women and some men still had no voting rights, and the majority of power continued to be only in rich white men’s hands. The primary changes to society took many years to adopt and for colonists to adapt to. It definitely was not an overnight process. The majority of colonists continued their everyday lives just the same as before the Revolution. Agriculture was uninterrupted as the primary means of life for most Americans. Eventually trade with Britain resumed peacefully with the help of the Jay Treaty. On the religious side of things, colonist found relief from the Anglican Church.
